My passion for the water and the beauty of the rugged Irish coastline that I live beside in County Mayo are key influences on my work. The influence of the sea and the weather systems that pummel the coast of Ireland are a rich source of research and material. My interest is not only on nature’s influence on our delicate natural environment but also on our human impact. Our changing landscapes both urban and natural are increasingly shaped and threatened by human intervention. These changes and their evolution over time are documented in several of my works which use paint, photography, maps, video and drawing to explore these themes. Older maps with ships on the ‘Anna Liffey’, modern ‘booking.com’ maps showing hotel prices and availability and route maps of now hidden rivers are drawn or used in collage form to give a sense of a changing city. The main composition of a building site (7,200 sqm in size) highlights the present day evolution of the city and also the challenges faced in providing housing for residents and accommodation for ever growing tourist numbers. This building complex, which is due to house a large social media company is vast in its scale (80,000 sqm in size) and potentially also in its influence on the city both online and physically. Dublin Bay and the Liffey shrink into the background as their importance as a key archery of the city has waned over time. This reflective body of water shows the reflection of the old offices of a now defunct Irish bank (whose premise spanned 6,500 spm) which engulfs the interconnected myriad of Dublin streets mapped out in the background. 28 x 35 cm Mixed Media on canvas.
